How to look after an office PC remotely, without anyone there
A shop's billing PC, an office's accounts machine, a branch server: computers you look after every week shouldn't need someone at the desk to read out a password. With unattended access, the owner allows your company once, and any of your supporters can connect when needed.
What you need
- A Beej Connect Business plan for your company (free for 14 days). Your vendor ID is shown in the company portal.
- Beej Connect installed on the computer you'll look after, from the download page.
- Someone at that computer for the one-time setup, usually the owner or office manager.
Step 1: the owner allows your company
On the computer you'll look after, in Beej Connect:
- Next to Unattended access, click Manage….
- Under Allow a company, enter your company's vendor ID (or the email of one of your supporters) and click Find.
- Check the company name shown is yours, and click Allow unattended access.
- Leave Also start Beej Connect when I sign in to Windows ticked, so you can connect while they're away.
Access is given to your company, not one person, so any of your supporters can help, and you don't need to set it up again when someone joins or leaves your team.
Step 2: connect from your list
In your Beej Connect, the computer now appears under My clients, with whether it's online right now. Click it to connect. No phone call and no password needed.
The owner stays in control
- Whenever someone is connected, the computer shows a panel naming who it is, with buttons to end the session.
- The owner can remove your company in Unattended access → Manage… at any time, and access stops at once.
- Every connection is recorded: your company admins see who connected, when and for how long in the company portal, and the owner sees recent connections in the app.
- When you disable a supporter in the portal, any session they have open ends straight away.
Good to know
- Unattended access works while someone is signed in to Windows on that computer and the screen isn't locked. Connecting at the Windows sign-in screen, and after a restart before anyone signs in, is coming soon.
- For computers that must stay reachable, set Windows to sign in automatically or ask the office to sign in after a restart.
- Only allow a company you know and trust. Scammers sometimes phone people and ask them to do exactly this.
Common questions
How many computers can we look after?
As many as your customers allow. The Business plan is priced per supporter, not per computer.
Does the computer need to be on?
Yes: it needs to be switched on, connected to the internet, and signed in to Windows with Beej Connect running. Your list shows which computers are online.
Can the owner see what we do?
If they're at the computer, yes: they see the screen as you work, and a panel saying who is connected. The session is also recorded in the history on both sides.
